Treat MS in TCM

Post a new topicby Charlie51 on Thu Nov 01, 2007 8:53 pm

TCM is a good way to assist patients suffering from MS All patients will meet cortisone treatment to alleviate the symptoms, but it could not stop its prograssion, even can not make most complains under the control.
In the clinic, I prefer to use TCM. The reason is:
First of all, it could efficient lenitive to major symptom of MS Menifestations like paralysis, blurred vision, chest tight, numbness on toe or finger tip, body aches, could be removed by acupuncture massae and herbal products.
The second is reduce the relapsing. In my opinion, all the cause and inducing of replasing is imbalance inside the body. Pathogenic factor as liver heat, damp and heat in liver channel, blood stagnation are commonly seen in clinic. General speaking, liver and kidney difficiency is root of the problem while secondary heat and stagnation in Qi and blood was regarded as twig.
The third reason I choice the TCM for my patient is its natural and harmonic rehabilitation means. Under the guidance of TCM notion, take the exercise match the Zheng the case belong to, patients
should get relaxation in both mental and physical condition.
In my experience, the trap for MS treatment is not in symptoms alleviation, but in controling of relapsing. One onset attack should cover all your endeavors in physical improvement. In this point, to focus on the relapsing is more important than anything else. This is the advantage of TCM.

A year ago I had numbness that began in the right half of my lip and went through my right arm and leg. I did not lose any strength, but after time both my arm and leg became heavy and I began to develop a limp. This went on for about 3 weeks, I was seeing a neurologist who was leaning towards an MS diagnosis and wanted to send me for more tests (cervical and spine MRI and EP tests), I had already undergone a brain MRI, cat scan, EKG and many blood tests (including lyme disease and b12 deficiency) which all came back fine.

I then saw a massage therapist who gave me a trigger point massage. I instantly felt great! I no longer had that stiffness/heaviness and I had been experiencing. About a month later the symptoms returned and another massage cleared them up. Being burnt out of doc offices and co-pays I opted to cancel all further tests for MS.

About eight months after that I began having pain in my right forearm that moved into my wrist, up my shoulder and into my chest. It hurt to lift a cup of coffee. My PCP sent me for an ultrasound to check for blood clots, thankfully none were found. I had another massage at this time and found it to be extremely painful. Spots in my shoulder blade would send nerve pain right up the back of my head. About 2.5 weeks later the symptoms were gone as quick as they came. A month after that had nerve pain in my heels, if I stepped down pain would go right up my leg and it had shooting pains from my heels up my leg that kept me awake at night. I opted to just wait this one out and eventually this went away too.

I'm pretty burnt out of going to doctors that just prescribe something, I've been prescribed Midrin after the first episode b/c they felt it was due to a migraine although I had no pain in my head and MRI did not show anything. I've also been prescribed Neproxen (for my arm) which sent me to the ER with terrible back pain and Vicoden, since the Neproxen didn't work. Also had ultrasound of kidneys after that ER trip to check for stones, everything looked fine.

I also experience dizziness on occasion and even went a couple of weeks recently where I was dizzy on a regular basis for about 4-5 hours every afternoon. And I have static in my left ear with certain noises. Often loud noises, but sometimes just the high pitch of my children talking will trigger it and also when I read aloud to my kids before bed I often hear it.

I should also note that most of the time I feel great, stress and anxiety definitely trigger symptoms, but when I don't have any symptoms, I forget what it is like to have the problem and when I am having the symptoms, I can't think of much else and often feel depressed.

Anyway, I know it's a long post and I appreciate any feedback. BTW are you a doctor?

Does this sound like MS? If not any other ideas?

Thanks!

Sorry, I reply so late.
I think you probably are suffering MS.
In the clinic, if your menifestation like weak limbs, ach or pain is comes and goes dramatically, you should think about it. Of course, you should take consideration of some check, such as CSF test and MRI test. If your MRI showed lesion sround brain cavity and your CSF test show obligconoal band, plus significant high reading in Ig G. You will be think as MS.

For the traditional Chinese Medicine, it is citrial that to distingush Cold and Heat. Also to monitoring the relapsing time (Hours and Season) to determined the involve the orgians(not anatomical conception). Most of case, it concern to the lung and kidney. If sharp pain, may inderictly connect to heart. Herbal Medicine will work in general regulation.

Well, As for me, I am a TCM doctor in China, now work in a University as a research assistant in USA.
