Alternative Medicine Laws

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Nov 20, 2001 1:10 am

Dr., I am researching chemotherapy alternatives and am curious about the doctor's responsibility to education. Is there a law that requires doctors to discuss all alternatives with patients? My 93 year old grandmother is dying from chemo not cancer, because her little body couldn't handle the stress- she made it only a few weeks through before her kidneys gave out. The doctor never told her that the cure would be worse than the cancer. If there isn't a law requiring this sort of treatment, shouldn't there be? Do you know of any movements to require this? Thanks.

Dear Kate,
First of all, my best wishes to you and your grandmother. It's a good question, that I will look further into for you. Also, I encourage you to check in with Dr. Herb Duvivier on the Oncology Channel here at healthcommunities.com --he may have some immediate information for you regarding doctors educating patients about alternative treatments and the law. Currently, as a Hypnotherapist, we work WITH doctors, providing an adjunct to medical treatments and services. Hypnosis and Imagery techniques are "Integrative" therapies to be used in conjunction WITH medical treatment. By our ethical guidelines, we do not offer our services as an "instead of" treatment for medicine. However, sometimes, clients do make choices on their own to use alternative methods of getting well, rather than traditional medical treatments. The mind is a powerful tool in helping to heal the body. I will check further on this for you. Ease and comfort are sent to you and your grandmother.
